Thinking Roman Soldier

Joseph Michel-Ange Pollet

19th Century

Bronze

This piece is a seated Roman soldier, made in the 19th century by the Italian sculptor Joseph Michel-Ange Pollet. Joseph’s style comes from his tutelage under highly famed Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The art generally depicts a simple elegance and grace through a more austere style. The 1800s saw a vast number of talented craftsmen in Europe spread throughout the rest of the world, as they would go on to breathe life into the art form once more, and giving it a foothold in the Americas, the Middle East, and Africa. This would pave the way for 20th century artists devote themselves to sculpting from the corners of central America, to the deep east bordering the Caspian Sea.
