Stick fighters
Keith Calder
2018
Bronze
This bronze sculpture depicts two Zulu men at war with one another, frozen in bronze. The brisk, sharper edges are reminiscent of a Keith Calder sculpture, as well as the earmarked ironmongery. Despite the rigid medium, Calder captures movement in a very vivid way in his sculptures. His works retain a sense of realism and naturalism whether he depicts humans or animals. In this artwork, the fight is in full thrust. The skirts are flaring, spears are ready and the warriors poised impossibly on their toes. This movement gives the artwork a different dimension and awakens the statues to come to life.
