This is a self-portrait of Francois Krige in the later years of his life. There is the bearing of the Post-Impressionist technique in his style that dogs the great artists of Van Gogh, Cezanne and Gaugin. In fact, this particular self-portrait of Krige holding his brush can be likened to one of Van Gogh’s. Both employ a textured blue background with the subject revealing the right side of his face, wearing a white shirt with a blue overcoat and holding his art utensils. Although Krige’s portrait is more realistic in rendering, there is an acknowledgement to Van Gogh. Krige’s use of light plays with the depth and realism of this portrait, also giving it a warm, soft glow.
