Francois Krige was well known for his sketches. It stems from the years he spent studying abroad, practising in Spain and Italy. Here, his “drawings developed a sureness of line and a stripping away of all superfluous elements in order to convey the essence of the subject” (Justin Fox, 2000). He sharpened his skills during his time as a war artist, from 1941-1943, where Krige learnt how to capture scenes around him in a quick study. This artwork appears to be a quick study of a domestic worker based in Montagu, the town where Krige lived. Even though its a sketch, Krige managed to capture the smooth texture of the woman’s face and the softness in her eyes. He etched detail into some parts of the artwork and let other parts melt away.
