Moses
Unknown
19th Century
Bronze
This bronze piece is a 19th-century copy of Michelangelo’s marble sculpture depicting a Renaissance version of Moses with the ten commandments, which is located in San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome. The statue is an exquisite homage to the earlier masters of a begun era in the world of art. This depiction also has a unique feature, in that Moses has two horns protruding from his head. The depiction of a horned Moses stems from the description of Moses' face as "cornuta" ("horned") in the Latin Vulgate translation of the passage found in Exodus chapter 34, specifically verses 29, 30 and 35, in which Moses returns to the people after receiving the commandments for the second time.
