Malawian Hand-Woven Chairs

Malawi

Unknown

Wood and Cane

These local African-style chairs, or Sungwe, are handmade in a village in Malawi and are unique to that area. This traditional Sungwe chair is made of cane woven on a wooden frame. The bamboo is intricately woven and has an almost beaded aesthetic, demonstrating the maker’s attention to detail. As they are handmade instead of produced in a factory, each chair is unique, and no two are the same. This one-of-a-kind furniture is imported to South Africa and has become a collector’s item in anyone’s home.
