Krisjan II

Francois Krige

Unknown

Oil on Canvas

This is the second portrait of ‘Krisjan’ in the 21 Nettleton Collection. Krisjan Swart was a nomadic character in Montagu that became the chief subject in many of Francois Krige’s artworks, including watercolours, sketches and oil paintings. In his depictions of Krisjan, Krige often gives him a coat, veldskoene, a staff and a hat, contributing to his wandering persona. In this artwork, there is a close-up of his face and his firm gaze, giving the viewer a chance to have an intimate conversation with the character. The sharp colour contrast creates a dramatic effect and emphasises the light.
