Freedom

Keith Calder

2008

Bronze

This life-size bronze sculpture is posted at the edge of 21 Nettleton’s luxury lawn, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. This artwork was created by South African artist Keith Calder and stretches into the delicate balance between man and nature. Nature is a prominent theme in Calder’s sculptures and his art centres on the raw power of nature in contrast to the human form. ‘Freedom’ was commissioned and co-created by collector Hugo Jankowitz, and speaks to the relationship between humans and nature. Man and eagle are caught in a dance, one reaching and the other escaping, yet still connected. The sculpture was made specifically for where it stands, with the Twelve Apostles mountain range resting in the back.
