Flemish Tapestry

Luxembourg

Unknown

Unknown

This piece comes from Flanders, which has an exquisite history with tapestry, stemming from the 13th century. Many Flemish tapestries have overtones of religious and historical subjects, as well as ritual hunting and harvest season depictions. They are renowned throughout Europe for their extensively high quality and excellent use of colours. The oldest ones were made in the 13th century, and they generally came from production centres in Arras and Doornik. Throughout the 14th century, the Dukes of Burgundy would often make requests for tapestries from these two regions, which would set the stage for their movements throughout Europe, as the tapestries were also made in Oudenaarde and Bruges. In the 16th century, Brussels and Antwerp became important in the trade, with Antwerp becoming the distribution centre for the rest of Europe.
