Egypt
Unknown
Unknown
This piece hails from ancient Egypt and is evocative of the Ptolemaic period of 305-30 BC. During this period, stone carvings for the pharaohs were frequent, as these items would inevitably be placed in the tombs of the great kings and queens of old. This particular stone carving stands at “”cm high, and has been kept from wearing down over the eras. These blocks first emerged in Egypt during the Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period and were typically used in temples typically as funerary monuments of non-royal, but important members of courts and society. According to primary sources from the New Kingdom, the posture of the statue was possibly intended to resemble a guardian seated in the gateway of a temple.
